Scores of protesters gathered in Penrith town centre in a public show of support for refugees coming to the UK.
Part of a wave of national protests under the Together With Refugees coalition, activists gathered by the Musgrave Monument from 4pm to 5pm today to sing songs, bang drums and listen to speeches.
Penrith and Eden Refugee Network led the gathering with a range of groups sending representatives including churches, schools and charities.
The protest coincided with the resumption of Parliament this week where the Nationality and Borders Bill, introduced by Home Secretary Priti Patel, looks set to pass.
A spokeswoman for PERN called the bill heartless as it would in-effect criminalise refugees coming to the UK under their own steam.
She added that the UK has a long history of welcoming refugees and that the majority of Cumbrians are compassionate people who she believes support the struggles of those fleeing violence or persecution abroad.
