Three weeks of road closures are planned for Appleby town centre next month so resurfacing work can be carried out.
From Monday March 7, Bridge Street will be closed for five working days and the work will then move to the Sands, lasting until Tuesday March 29.
The issue was discussed at the town council meeting last night and while concerns were raised about business deliveries, school travel and emergency access, the clerk informed the council that exceptions are being made to the closure and awareness is being spread.
Responding to complaints from residents that the work should be carried out at night, the council was told it was not common practice in residential areas.
While the official diversion route suggests motorists go via Brough or Penrith this is due to the fact National Highways have to legally provide a detour route with roads of equivalent quality to those closed – people were advised they would still be able to use other roads at their own discretion.
Pedestrian access will be maintained and the bollards will be replaced following resurfacing.
