The Shepherds Inn at Langwathby reopened on Monday, just days after a car crashed and caused extensive damage to part of the 500-year-old building.
Owner Stephen Wilcock shut his family-run business last Wednesday after a 4am single vehicle collision in which two occupants escaped with minor injuries.
The 17-year-old female driver was arrested by police and released under investigation.
But fears of a lengthy pub closure were swiftly allayed as initial building work took place and resulted in the business opening its doors to customers again on Monday.
“After a very difficult and stressful week, we’re happy to say that we were able to reopen,” said Stephen. “Our passionate team have worked tirelessly since the crash to prepare the pub. With thanks to Castle View Construction, who were able to very quickly install supports and a temporary wall, the building has been made safe enough to reopen.
“Although we’ve lost a few tables due to the incident, and have lost a section of the dining room while the temporary walls are up, we’re open and serving as normal.”
It had been a trying time for everybody at the Shepherds Inn, said Stephen, who has run the business for nine years with wife Louise, son Graham and daughter Felicity.
“But we’re all glad to be open again,” he reflected. “Our wonderful chefs are back in the kitchen trying new dishes, creating new specials, and cooking the classics we’re famous for. The beer coolers are back on and waiting for our drinkers.
“The builders are due to start work on rebuilding the wall immediately, and a new window is currently being fabricated. We’re hoping that once the work is done, the damage will be unnoticeable.
“Obviously, we’re keen to keep the same aesthetic, both internally and externally, so as not to ruin the classic look of our picturesque village.
“Our building is 500 years old, and replacing such an old wall is a mammoth task. We wish to thank Castle View Construction, Lee Forster Stonework and our insurance company NFU Mutual for their quick response and help.
“The fire is lit and the kitchen is open. We hope to see everyone again soon.”
