An 18-metre mast could be erected in Hackthorpe by a national telecommunications company.
Planning permission is being sought by WHP telecoms, on behalf of Three, for the mast, which will provide 4G and 5G coverage to the local area.
The mast — which would be the same height as nine Michael Jordans, four giraffes and even compete with towers of the nearby Lowther Castle — will be located on the corner by Orchard House, where there is currently a community notice board.
One resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “I’m not against them building the pole, but why there? It’s right next to houses in the middle of the village.”
The proposal is still in the consultation phase and people can comment on the development on Eden District Council’s planning register.
A spokeswoman for Three said: “We understand residents may have concerns about location but we always try to ensure our masts are as unobtrusive as possible for those living in the area.
“Masts do need to be situated near to where they will be used and often in specific locations to ensure the widest breadth of coverage.”
WHP Telecoms consulted Eden District Council on locating the mast before the official application was submitted to the planning authority.
The Phase Eight Monopole will also include a cabinet at its base and developers have said that they offer masts in a range of colours from which the local planning authority can choose.
Eve Wyke, who submitted the application for WHP Telecoms, said: “The location has been identified as being necessary for business development and meets its specific technical and operational requirements.”
