It has long been a tradition to eat fish and chips on Good Friday — and the owner of Penrith’s newest takeaway had high hopes that it would give his business a frying start for a bumper Easter weekend of trade.
Ken Karapinar, 39, of Middlegate-based Ken’s fish and chips, moved to Penrith with family from Chester six years ago.
Having always been involved in the food industry since leaving school, Ken ran a chip shop in Chester for three years before moving to Cumbria.
The father-of-three, who is married to Donna, said the family decided to move up to the area for a new adventure after visiting as tourists.
What sets his fish and chip shop apart from many others is the number of types of fish on offer. As well as cod, customers can enjoy plaice, haddock and even rock eel, which is a dogfish, said Ken.
But Ken said in the four weeks he had been open, only one person had so far ordered the rock fish!
He also does a lite bite deal all day, which includes a smaller piece of cod than the regular offering.
His opening hours of noon to 10pm, every day, are also longer than most.
“We fry everything fresh for every order,” said Ken, when asked what his secret was for traditional fish and chips.
Ahead of the Easter weekend, he said he was looking forward to being kept busy.
