More opportunities are needed for Penrith’s young people in order to stem mental ill health and anti-social behaviour in the town, says Ben Perris.
At 17, Ben, who is a Member of the Youth Parliament, is the youngest person involved in the Penrith Futures Partnership, a group with the shared aim of reinvigorating the town for years to come.
“It is clear that for many young people Penrith just does not offer enough, leading to young people committing anti-social activities,” said Ben.
“I had many of my constituents tell me that Penrith can be quite boring, there is so little to do.
“This is one of the main reasons I joined the group, I wanted to expand opportunities for young people through different arts and cultural events.
“To ensure that young people have safe spaces to hang out on an evening.”
Since March, 2020 Ben has represented Carlisle and Eden at the Youth Parliament, giving young people a voice on a national level, so he is well-versed in the needs of his peers.
This has involved visiting schools across Eden, listening to the needs of young people.
Living, working and studying in Penrith, Ben is at the heart of the community.
Currently he is creating a form to hand out to youngsters in secondary education to further understand what they would like to see in the town moving forward.
“I also want to make sure that any changes that do take place have everyone in focus. I want to make sure that there is something for everyone to benefit from in Penrith and I truly believe that the partnership can deliver this goal, along with the local residents.
“It concerns me that young people can feel like there is nothing to do in Penrith because this can lead to other issues such as antisocial behaviour or mental ill health and when young people are studying for GCSEs and A-levels this can add other problems.
“I want to make sure that every young person gets what they need, not just out of school but out of Penrith, to become strong, independent adults.”
