After months of free parking, charges will come back in to effect today for Eden District Council’s pay and display car parks in Penrith and in Broad Close car park, Appleby.
Eden District Council has provided free car parking throughout the majority of the COVID-19 pandemic to assist those coming into the towns to use the shops, services and facilities the towns have to offer.
The council continued with this offer over the Christmas and New Year period.
The council has now reinstated car parking charges in all its off-street car parks.
Local business employees and shopkeepers are asked to continue to park as they do normally and not to occupy the free parking bays in the car parks, in order to ensure that there are plenty of central parking spaces available for shoppers.
Councillor Mike Tonkin, services portfolio holder for Eden District Council, said: “Although car parking charges have come back in to effect we are already planning to consider a range of parking measures to support the towns in 2021 and we will make announcements early this year.”
