Penrith town centre has a different look this week with the town’s Middlegate being closed to traffic for essential gas works.
Northern Gas Networks (NGN) — the gas distributor for the north of England — is carrying out essential work to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in Middlegate and King Street.
A spokesman said: “Ageing metal pipework is now being replaced by new, more durable plastic pipes, to ensure a reliable supply of gas to customers now while getting the network ready to transport alternative greener fuels in the future.”
The work started on Wednesday and is expected to last up to eight weeks. It has been planned in collaboration with Westmorland and Furness Council and diversion signs have been put in place to help motorists navigate their way around the road closures.
