Mountain rescuers in the Lake District were left stumped after reports of an unaccompanied boy of about 12 years of age on Striding Edge, Helvellyn.
Patterdale Mountain Rescue team were alerted by Cumbria Police at 9.15pm on Wednesday following a report by a member of the public that a boy had been seen alone on the jagged ridge. The steeply-sided high-level route leads to England’s third highest mountain and has seen many fatalities down the decades.
A spokesman for the volunteer team said: “The duty leader discussed the report with Cumbria Police and attempts were made to recontact the reporting person, however these proved unsuccessful.
“Since there were no reports of a missing child, and given the the original information, the report was noted but no further action was taken. No subsequent information has come to light.”
The incident involved three team members for about a hour.
