Workington MP Mark Jenkinson.

A man has admitted leaving a menacing voicemail on the office phone line of Workington MP Mark Jenkinson.

Andrew Blundell, 54, whose address was given as Mill Terrace, Penrith, appeared before magistrates in Carlisle and faced one charge brought under the Malicious Communications Act.

Entering a guilty plea, Blundell admitted that on August 14 he had made a phone call and left a voicemail for the Conservative Party MP which, court papers show, conveyed a threat for the purpose of causing distress anxiety to recipient.

Magistrates concluded, after hearing an outline of the facts from a prosecutor, that the content of Blundell’s voicemail message amounted to a death threat.

The case was adjourned for the preparation of a probation service pre-sentence report. Blundell was granted unconditional bail and is due to be sentenced on October 10.

Mr Jenkinson said in a statement after the court hearing: “I believe that all those who choose to serve their community should be able to do so without being threatened.”
