The M6 between Shap and Penrith is closed following a collision and a lorry fire.
The northbound carriageway between junctions 39 and 40 is closed and the the southbound carriageway is closed while firefighters are on the scene to deal with the blaze.
It is not known how long the road will be closed and diversions are in place.
Drivers are warned delays are likely.
A police spokesman said: “Police and partner agencies are currently dealing with a collision on M6 between junction 39 and junction 40 northbound.
“The M6 northbound may be closed for some time. Motorists are asked to avoid the area.
“Diversions are in place via the A6 due to closures at J39 and J40, there is currently a temporary closure at J40 southbound.”
