Langwathby Stores and Post Office has gone up for sale with a guide price of £725,000.
The rural Nisa franchise is owned by Chistopher Jones who is planning to retire, having run the village shop for nine years.
The business will continue to operate fully while it stays on the market.
“I’m selling for the simple fact that I turn 75 years old next week,” said Mr Jones.
“We’ve very much enjoyed our time here and we’ll miss all our staff. They’ve been brilliant throughout the lockdowns and have all been made aware of the changes.”
When combining the income streams of the shop, post office and lottery; the business boasts average weekly takings in excess of £40,000.
Mr Jones said while he can’t predict how interested potential buyers will be, he expects the sale to take around six months.
This is partly due to the fact that the Post Office needs to grant investors a license to operate under its branding.
Having first retired aged 65, Mr Jones was unable to remain inactive and bought Langwathby Stores when he moved to Eden.
Prior to this he worked in the motor industry, selling cars from his family dealership in Essex for 52 years.
A former chairman of Melmerby Parish Council and active in running the village hall, his plan is to remain living locally.
However, he won’t be putting his feet up just yet, instead Mr Jones will focus his time on other endeavours such as sailing, walking and exploring the UK by train.
