An inquest has been opened following the death of a Penrith man who was found unresponsive inside a car on a road near the town.
David Benjamin Nicholls, 50, was underneath a duvet in the back of a vehicle which was located on the B5288 near Penrith, Cockermouth Coroners’ Court heard this week.
Mr Nicholls’ death was formally confirmed by a paramedic on December 11 shortly before 10pm.
An inquest was opened by Kirsty Gomersal, acting senior coroner for Cumbria, during a short hearing.
“Can I take this opportunity to offer to Mr Nicholls’ family and friends my deepest condolences on his passing,” said Ms Gomersal.
A statement confirming Mr Nicholls’ identity had been provided by a friend of his.
A post mortem examination had been carried out although Mr Nicholls’ death was currently unascertained pending further enquiries.
The hearing was told that Blackpool-born Mr Nicholls latterly lived in York Street, Penrith, and was employed as a carpet cleaner and delivery driver.
Ms Gomersal concluded that a full inquest would be required, and adjourned the hearing to a provisional conclusion date of May 22 2025.
