It was the end of an era for Kirkby Thore Pre-School as the centre has shut its doors for the final time.
The end of the school term also marked the end of the pre-school, as it closed after 25 years in operation.
With just four children on the books, declining numbers over the past few years has meant the centre is no longer financially viable.
Registered to care for 18 children, at its peak the pre-school had 22 children on its books attending on different days.
Set up by Fran Hughes in 1996, the pre-school first had Kirkby Thore Primary School hall as its base before moving to the village memorial hall.
Around 12 years ago it moved back to the primary school.
Leader Janet Skelton, who lives in Kirkby Thore, has been caring for and teaching children at the pre-school through the 25 years and has been leader for over 20.
Working alongside her has been Holly Wills, of Penrith, who is now set to start a new job at a local school.
Janet and Holly said they had both enjoyed every minute of their time at pre-school and leave with wonderful memories of the children and their families.
They also thanked the committee, helpers and parents who have wholeheartedly supported them over the years.
Janet added: “I’ve always loved it and it’s nice to see the children growing up and develop and go on to the next stage.
“It’s nice to experience new things with the children and it’s a job I’ve just always loved. It’s been a fab time being involved in the village.”
Kirkby Thore Primary School headteacher Neal Banner said: “The pre-school has been part of the community for many years and it’s very sad to see it come to an end.
“Throughout the years, the school and pre-school have worked very closely together which means our school is now in a great position to welcome nursery aged children from September.”
