Emergency telephones on a stretch of the M6 near Penrith are not working due to technology issues.
Engineers are on due on site between Junctions 38 and 40.
National Highways traffic operations manager Neil Lloyd said: “We are currently experiencing some technology issues with our emergency roadside telephones on the M6 between Junctions 38 and 40. We are investigating this and will get this resolved as a priority.
“Road users can still call our Customer Contact Centre for assistance using their mobile phone on 0300 123 5000.
“Our traffic officers are actively patrolling our road network, and will stop and go to the assistance of any vehicle breakdown they come across whilst our control room operators continue to monitor the network using CCTV.”
