Two Eden mums have been recognised for their commitment to supporting breastfeeding mothers across Penrith and surrounding areas.
Rosie Gard-Storry and Helen Meehan, both of Penrith, volunteer with children’s charity Barnardo’s.
They volunteer with the Eden 0-19 Child and Family Support Service – commissioned by Cumbria County Council – as breastfeeding peer supporters, supported by the NHS Infant feeding co-ordinator for South Cumbria and Eden, to help other mums with breastfeeding and overcoming any challenges they may be having.
They have been given a Marsh Trust Award for their work.
Marsh Trust Awards recognise people at the heart of the charity sector who go above and beyond to make a difference.
Both have been volunteering for over three years and were nominated by the service.
Rosie said: “I feel honoured to receive this award. I know how tough the last few years have been, so being able to offer a small amount of support to new families has given me purpose and joy.”
Helen added: “I really enjoy volunteering for Barnardo’s. As a new mum first time round who had never breastfed before and not experienced being around many other mums who had breastfed, I gained so much knowledge and support from attending the group each week and talking to other mums in a similar position. This has enabled me to successfully breastfeed both my daughters.
“I wanted to volunteer to be able to support other mums in a similar position who have new babies and encourage them to achieve their goals too and be there to support them at a time which is often incredibly hard work and overwhelming.”
