With just over one month to go until Christmas it is time to start thinking about getting that perfect present.
Whether you are looking for a one-off special gift or a range of locally made goodies, the winter craft fair at Alston over the weekend of Friday, 17th, to Sunday, 19th November, will have plenty to fit the bill.
Almost 30 of the best designer makers and producers working in and around the North Pennines will be taking part this year and the organisers have gathered a wide range of arts, crafts and local produce, all of the highest quality.
This established event takes over the town hall for the weekend and is known for its relaxed atmosphere with refreshments, live acoustic music and opportunities to browse and enjoy hassle-free shopping.
Jessica Cooper, a ceramicist based near Alston, is one of the core organisers of the event, along with Claire Adie (aka Glassie Lassie), Michelle McDonald, of Hazy Days Design, and Nikki House, a volunteer from Alston.
“We’re all looking forward to welcoming visitors this year,” said Jessica “and we’ll have a real mix of artists and craftspeople, including several new faces. It’s always encouraging when people return year after year. Good examples are local illustrator Sheila Mitton and Louise from Stokoe House preserves who will both be back with us in November.”
There will be at least six new businesses taking part this year as well as a first-time local author, Sue Reed, promoting her novel for young adults, The Rewilding of Molly McFlynn, with a sale of artwork and signings at various times over the weekend.
The most local to Alston of the new faces are Two 8ths (textile gifts and homewares) and woodworker Jamie Douglas, trading as Labour and Lustre, both based in north Cumbria. John and Hilary Nunn, from Allendale, trading as Cornerstone Pottery and Woodturning, will also be involved for the first time.
“With about 10 other makers on our doorstep at Alston, it’s a really local event,” said Jessica, “and we’ve always created a nice, relaxed way to shop, with something for everyone, whatever their budget.”
Musicians performing live will include James Gillespie, Fred Sheriff, Peter Rowan and Joss Clap. Refreshments will be provided by Saddler’s Bakery Bistro.
