A Warcop couple have this week celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary.
John and Margaret Heron first met at a Christian conference in Wigton.
Margaret was at the time living in her home town of Leicester and after they met, John, who was living on the family farm at Warcop, regularly made the six-hour journey to visit his future wife.
Margaret worked for a director of Wolsey, a clothes manufacturing firm, and often travelled to London for work.
The couple were married on 8th May, 1965, at Margaret’s local church in Leicester and then went on to build their own home at Warcop, next to the farm.
Their Christian faith brought them together and they say it has been central to their happy marriage of 60 years, along with mutual respect, talking issues through together, and working together with loving care.
John said: “A Christian marriage is like a triangle, joined together with each other and both linked with God.”
The couple have three children, Rachel Woof, who lives in Orton, Angela McMahon, who lives in Australia, and Andrew Heron, who lives in Carnforth.
They also have five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The now 83-year-old couple enjoy seeing and speaking to their family regularly and always have an open door for family and friends.
After John retired from the farm following foot and mouth disease, the couple were both involved with Christian work in Bulgaria and Romania.
They are both also still actively involved with church activities and the community.
