Couple open antiques shop at Penrith’s Brougham Hall after online success

David and Gaynor Prior, of No43 Collectables at Brougham Hall, Penrith.

A rock ’n’ roll lighting expert who jetted out to the States this week to rejoin Beyoncé’s Renaissance World Tour is one half of a husband and wife team who opened their new antiques shop at Brougham Hall.

David and Gaynor Prior, of No43 Collectables Ltd, who live near Ivegill, were hit hard by the COVID pandemic which brought all public live events to a standstill. David’s work in the music industry on large, worldwide tours dried up, while Gaynor had worked as an event director for trail running events in the Lake District.

“Obviously both of these industries ground to a halt for a time,” said Gaynor.

“We’ve always been extremely interested in antiques, vintage and interior design, having renovated a number of period properties over the years.

“The lockdown situation gave us the push to start our own business, initially trading online and then at various antique fairs around the country once the restrictions eased.”

David, who flew to the USA on Monday, has previously toured with the likes of Madonna, the Rolling Stones, Justin Bieber, Foo Fighters and Andrea Bocelli.

He has also worked on the opening ceremonies of the Olympics and Commonwealth Games.

Coming from a theatrical background as a former wig maker, Gaynor has a keen eye for design and history and is the buyer for the business, purchasing items she loves with her eclectic taste. David is the practical one, bringing the stock back to life.

“Being from a rock ’n’ roll lighting background, having toured the world with various bands, he can pretty much rewire anything,” said Gaynor.

The couple have visited Brougham Hall many times over the years, having been neighbours of Christopher Terry, who was responsible for the property’s renovation.

Gaynor added: “Brougham Hall is a fantastic venue and setting for No43 Collectables. Not only is it a beautiful 14th Century building, but it’s home to a creative group of artisans, producing and selling a range of goods including a forge, silversmith, textile designer, bespoke joiner, ceramics, a cafe and the new Black Cat Distillery.

“Brougham Hall is also very conveniently located just outside of Penrith, off the A6 and A66, and close to Junction 40 of the M6. It is open from Wednesday to Sunday, 11am to 4pm.”
