A marine conservationist visited five Cumbrian primary schools to talk about plastic pollution and sustainable behaviour.
The talks, by marine conservationist Libby Bowles, were sponsored by Mark Williamson, of Wildchild Photography, whose children attend Penruddock School.
“I had heard Libby on a podcast and wondered if she would come and talk to my children’s school, at Penruddock,” said Mark. “To make it worth her while, I suggested that she could talk to a few other schools, and she agreed. So I sponsored her through my business, which is very much focused on children being in and learning about the natural environment. The tour took us around five schools in two days.”
Mark added: “Libby talked to the children about the damage that plastic is doing to the environment, specifically the ocean. To say that the children were inspired is an understatement.
“It sounds like some will be making posters, videos and even writing to their local councils. There were a few budding marine biologists in there and it was a shame that we didn’t have more time to spend with them.
“The headteachers and teachers were all really excited and helpful, so hopefully this will kickstart a plastic-free north Lakes.”
The schools visited by Libby were Patterdale, Penruddock and Stainton, Borrowdale and St Herbert’s, Keswick.
