Kirkby Stephen mountain rescuers were called into action on the evening of Wednesday to carry out a technically complex operation at Hell Gill, near the start of the River Eden.
The team extracted a casualty who had broken her ankle in the deepest part of the gill, which incorporates a waterfall – a popular visitor attraction.
She was treated by the team’s swift water rescue technicians and brought up on a stretcher using a rope system.
The 15 team members involved proved to be just enough for such a complicated rescue — and they were not helped by the clouds of midges at the scene, they said!
