
Two men who set fire to stables at Newton Rigg campus, near Penrith, have been handed community orders by Carlisle Magistrates’ Court.
Jack Handley Deakin McCaig, 19, of Newton Reigny, and Keir Jake Andrew Thompson, 20, of Fairhill Road, Penrith, each pleaded guilty to the arson, which took place at the Askham Bryan College site on July 21 last year, which caused more than £200-worth of damage.
They also each pleaded guilty to two counts of criminal damage, to the door handle for the equine arena and to the kitchen door of a yurt.
In addition to the community orders requiring them to each carry out 60 hours of unpaid work, both men were also order to pay £116.75 in compensation, a £95 victim surcharge and £85 court costs.
