A film starring Colin Firth and featuring local people when it was shot in Keswick and the North Lakes is to receive its world premiere next month.
Supernova, whose writer and director Harry Macqueen has strong links with Keswick, will be screened for the first time at the San Sebastian International Film Festival in Spain which runs from 18th-26th September.
Firth, 59, stars alongside American actor Stanley Tucci in a movie which follows the pair as they tour the UK in their camper van, with secrets unravelling while they struggle with a dementia diagnosis.
Scenes were shot around Keswick, including the market and Theatre by the Lake, as well as Honister and Whinlatter.
The Oscar-winning British actor, famous for his lake swim as Mr Darcy in Pride and Prejudice, was also among a Supernova party who watched another movie at the Alhambra cinema in Keswick during a break in filming last October.
Several local people were among a dozen hired as extras during filming when movie makers had to use rain machines to shoot one scene as Cumbria was going through a dry spell last autumn.
Supernova’s director is the nephew of actor and writer Peter Macqueen, who lives in Braithwaite and has appeared many times at the Theatre by the Lake.
He also appears in Supernova as Clive, the brother-in-law of Firth’s character.
Macqueen junior is an actor too, but this is his second film as director following his highly regarded debut Hinterland.
“It is a huge honour to be premiering the film at San Sebastian this year,” he said.
“Supernova is a film about how love overcomes even the hardest human experiences and what we are willing to sacrifice for the people we adore. It is a romantic and life-affirming film, which at a time like this seems more important than ever.”
No date has yet been announced for Supernova’s UK premiere.
