A buyer has been found for Eden Council-owned Mansion House, but the authority is remaining tight-lipped about their identity.
At a meeting of the council’s overview and scrutiny committee, interim director of resources Paul Sutton said work on the disposal of Mansion House was ongoing.
“Heads of terms have been agreed with the buyer and due diligence and surveys are being arranged,” he said.
According to the online listing by property consultancy Walton Goodland, of particular interest would be the redevelopment of the property for hospitality/hotel purposes or conversion for residential use.
The Grade II listed building in Friargate, Penrith, has car parking for up to 88 vehicles across its front and rear.
Mansion House was constructed in about 1750 by John Welpdale. It was purchased by Penrith District Council in 1919 and inherited by Eden Council following local government reorganisation in 1974.
With a single site having now been secured with the acquisition of Voreda House, in Portland Place, to become Eden District Council’s new headquarters, Mansion House has found itself surplus to the district authority’s requirements.
