Life is looking better and better for Beeb the lucky lurcher, who had to undergo emergency surgery while under the care of charity Eden Animal Rescue.
Beeb had been with the charity since January and was taken for a routine health check with vets Frame, Swift and Partners, who found he had a large tumour on his spleen.
An operation to remove it was scheduled, but he became ill and had to be rushed in for emergency surgery, which resulted in the removal of a mass weighing 3.5kg — 10 per cent of his body weight.
Fortunately, it was found the tumour was not malignant and 10-year-old Beeb made a good recovery from the operation, convalescing for three weeks with Fran Flower, a volunteer and trustee at Eden Animal Rescue, while a new permanent home was sought for him.
This search bore fruit last month, with Beeb moving into a new home with a family with experience of looking after a lurcher.
Fran said: “I miss him still but his new humans, Jane and Rob, who live just outside Wigton, are giving him a wonderful life.
“He’s already had several adventures, including a trip to Silloth and to Bassenthwaite Lake, plus lovely, interesting walks.
“But when running round a friend’s paddock he put his back out so a hasty trip to the vet was needed and a return visit the next day. He’s on painkillers and anti-inflammatory medication and appears to be back to normal now.”
She added: “He has really fallen on his paws with Jane and Rob and their 18-year-old son.”
One of Beeb’s early outings after his operation was to Glenridding to welcome three Eden Animal Rescue staff members who had walked the 20-mile Ullswater Way to raise money to help pay for his treatment.
The effort by the charity’s deputy manager, Vicki Broughton, Alex Bowness and Sarah Harrison raised a total of more than £1,000.
A spokesman for Eden Animal Rescue thanked those who supported the sponsored walk, but added that the charity still has lurchers, other dogs and cats needing new homes.
