Mayor’s medals have been given to a number of individuals for work that they did for the town of Penrith during 2020.
Councillor Doug Lawson — the former mayor — presented them to three of the recipients recently.
Rachel Lee Douglas received one for her quick response at the start of the pandemic in setting up the Community Support Penrith Facebook page.
This provided public health information and enabled people within the community to communicate, share activities and support each other. The page has
continued to provide information.
Tony Pears received an award for for his “wombling” tendencies, including picking up litter and organising community litter picks to make the town a cleaner and more pleasant place to live.
Cameron Stewart’s award was for his Christmas campaign in which he organised collections of cards and gifts for every resident and staff member in care homes in Penrith.
This then grew to providing cards for staff in all NHS facilities in Cumbria.
Missing from the presentation was Amy Bray, who will receive her medal when she is home from university.
Amy has been recognised for her passion for the environment and encouraging people to live more sustainably.
The enthusiasm she has for creating activities for young people to teach them about and inspire sustainability is infectious and is helped by the creation of her charity, Another Weigh.
