Support will be offered to Appleby residents with memory problems thanks to a new club.
In a joint initiative between Appleby Rotary Club and the town’s Sands Methodist Church, Appleby will host the inaugural meeting of a new ‘Memory Club’ on February 9 from 10.30am-noon in the chapel hall.
The aim of the club is to provide, especially for local residents with memory problems, an opportunity to enjoy music, crafts, games and entertainment. There’ll be coffee, tea and biscuits and the opportunity to chat with friends in a relaxed atmosphere.
This new regular event every second and fourth Wednesday of every month will have the support of Eden Carers, the Alzheimer’s Society and Cumbria Social Services. There will be no charge for attendees and there is no need to book before coming along.
Rev Andrew Sterling, Minister at the Sands said: “We have been aware for some time that many people locally lack the opportunity to meet together and participate in activities which can enhance memory capacity, especially as we get older. We have been fortunate in this exciting joint venture with Appleby Rotary that so many supportive individuals and organisations are able to help us provide this.”
Tim Parkin, Appleby Rotary’s Chair of Community & Vocational Committee added: “All will be welcome and we hope we can make a positive difference for people. My mother in her later years suffered from memory loss. I know she would have enjoyed and benefited from such an initiative. Appleby Rotary are really pleased to be part of this activity and hope it will help many local residents.”
