A Christmas party due to take place for Appleby Football Club in the town’s Market Hall has been cancelled.
In a statement, released by the club on social media, officials said the party – due to take place on December 27 – was being cancelled due to circumstances outside its control.
It said: “It is obviously with regret that we have had to cancel the event, but our town council do want what is best for the town and they have decided that no events will be going ahead in the Market Hall for the foreseeable future.
“As soon as we are more clear (as a nation) as to when we are allowed to host large events again then we will be straight back to planning another party for the town of Appleby.
“Whether that be next spring, summer, autumn or winter. Everyone that has already bought tickets will be reimbursed.”
The cancellation comes alongside news from Colin Cox, Cumbria’s director of public health, that new Omicron cases are doubling every two days in the county.
There are now around 90 confirmed cases in Cumbria, up from 16 on December 9.
Mr Cox said today: “Omicron is spreading very fast in Cumbria now and is well on the way to becoming the dominant variant of the COVID-19 virus.
“The scientific advice is clear that it poses a serious risk, and you can see that in the steps Government is taking.
“Being vaccinated is your best protection and I’d urge people to book their booster jab as soon as possible and make sure they follow all the standard public safety advice – wear a mask in enclosed spaces, wash your hands, ventilate, and get tested if you have symptoms.”
