The new owner of an Appleby gift store, has been receiving a warm welcome from the community, including some of the store’s previous owners.
Tina Langley who took over Branthwaites this week, lives in Appleby and is the latest proprietor of the gift shop, which has existed in the town for over 35 years. She takes over from outgoing owner Jo Johnstone who was pleased to share a picture with Tina to commemorate the occasion, alongside Jo’s parents Gillian and Peter Whiting who also previously ran the store.
Tina says in an interesting local twist, she had known Jo from some years ago, as Jo had bought her wedding dress from Tina.
Tina is in a good position to take on the store and continue its success, as she has a strong history in retail including previously running the Wedding Barn at the village of Bolton, Appleby. Tina opened for business as the new owner of the Boroughgate-based store on Monday.
“It has been going great,” said Tina. “A lot of locals have come in, and a lot of people have come to wish us good luck. It is supported by the local community, which is great.”
Tina, who is also an upholsterer, says she does not plan big changes but is aiming to add some new lines to the store.
“I like antiques so you might get a couple of antique chairs and some cushions in, but predominantly it is going to stay as gifts and cards, because that is how it has been run for all these years.
“I am going to honour the history of it and keep true to form. I will be holding true to its core values.” Typical products also include jewellery, pottery and stationery. Tina is also looking at expanding offerings from local artists and creatives, including fine art and pottery.
“We want to support the local area. It is about supporting your local community. That will be happening,” she says.
The shop is also already benefiting from regular tourist customers. “When I opened the shop this morning, three gentlemen followed me in and they went straight to the fridge magnets, all saying Appleby!”
Tina also praised Appleby as a fantastic community, and highlighted how the town’s retail hub has a “thriving” feel to it.
Branthwaites is currently opening six days a week, Monday to Saturday, but Tina says she plans to also trial a Sunday opening at a later stage this year.
