The A66 is closed to high-sided vehicles between Brough and Scotch Corner.
Cumbria police said the road was closed for high-sided vehicles both ways due to strong winds.
Earlier this morning, emergency services were called to deal with an overturned HGV east of Stainmore between the A685 at Brough and the A67 at Bowes.
The fire service was called 4.46am. Three fire engines attended and the driver had to be released by firefighters from the cab.
The driver was handed over to the North West Ambulance Service for treatment.
Firefighters made the scene safe and were detained for 40 minutes.
National Highways said the eastbound carriageway remained closed while the vehicle is recovered.
