An 82ft phone mast could go on farmland close to prime Wainwright walking territory in the Lake District.
The scheme in the Buttermere Valley, complete with antennae and ground-based equipment, has been submitted to Lake District planners on behalf of telecoms provider, EE Ltd.
It is currently with the Lake District National Park Authority and out for consultation.
The location of the proposed mast is on agricultural land owned by William and Maureen Richardson, close to Peggy’s Bridge and Gatesgarth Farm, between Honister Pass and Buttermere.
It aims to provide excellent coverage across a wide-ranging not spot, which would help the emergency services.
Applicants say the aim is to provide the greatest coverage for the lowest visual and environmental impact.
Documents submitted in support of the plan show that EE has twice met with officials from the LDNPA to discuss options.
The location is regarded as generally acceptable, according to applicants.
The mast size falls within permitted development rules, so the principle is not up for debate – only the siting and appearance of the apparatus.
“The siting and appearance of the proposal is considered the best possible to improve 4G connectivity across the widest area in the extended area service and EAS and SRN locality,” said representatives for the applicants.
“For this reason, it is hoped that the planning authority can support the application. The proposed apparatus will bring excellent connectivity along this part of the valley. It will do so with a shared mast thereby reducing overall landscape impacts.”
A minimal compound is proposed. A decision on the application will be made by the LDNPA in the new year.
