50 bags of litter collected by volunteers

More than 50 bags of rubbish were collected as part of an Alston Moor litter pick.

A large number of volunteers answered the call to assist with the main clean-up event which took place in Alston earlier this month.

Norman English, who organises these events, said: “I was overwhelmed by the response. Whilst the pick was concentrated on Saturday morning, a number of smaller teams, went out on Saturday afternoon and Sunday.

“Over 50 bags of rubbish were collected and because so many people turned up, we nearly ran out of blue Eden District Council rubbish bags.

“Areas covered included Tyne Willows, the Alston Recreation Ground (known locally as the Fairhill) as well as a long stretch of the Alston to Hartside Pass road.

“It’s obvious to those involved that a lot of the rubbish is deliberate. However it is also noted that at our altitude, even if people use the waste bins, the wind blows rubbish from the bins,, turning the blue bags inside the bins inside out.”

It is anticipated that a further pick to complete the Hartside and Nenthead main roads will take place soon, with details to be posted on social media nearer the time.

Mr English added: “It would also be remiss not to mention that a number of other local volunteers regularly pick up litter either when out for a walk or exercising their dogs — thanks to everyone concerned.

“There has also been an improvement in the recycle centre at Alston which the parish council authorised and it does seem to keep down a lot of the mess and is reducing wind issues.

“It will never of course prevent fly tipping which is the bane of our countryside.”
