The owners of holiday resort chain Center Parcs has put the group – including Whinfell Forest, near Penrith, up for sale.
Brookfield, a Canadian private equity group, is reported to be looking for between £4 billion and £5 billion.
The group bought the resort group from Blackstone for around £2.4bn in 2015.
Center Parcs has six holiday villages in the UK and Ireland. The first UK location opened in 1987, at Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire. It bought the Cumbrian site in 2001.
Whinfell Forest has welcomed over 10 million people through its doors and employs over 1,400 people.
The Financial Times said that Brookfield had appointed investment bankers to sound out potential buyers, including other private equity firms.
