Equipment at Penrith Leisure Centre’s gym is to get a £280,000 makeover — with a further £100,000 to be spent on updating its internet, floor covering, décor and lighting.
Mike Tonkin, Eden District Council’s services portfolio holder, told a meeting of its cabinet held in Shap — where the funding allocation was agreed — that the gym’s fitness equipment had now come to the end of its expected life and an upgrade was needed.
In addition, gym design, layout and connection requirements had all changed, and the current gym floor covering, décor and lighting were in need of replacing.
Life Fitness Ltd was awarded the contract to replace the gym equipment following a procurement exercise carried out in February 2022, with consultation with Greenwich Leisure Limited, the present operators of the leisure centre.
When the leisure management contract was awarded in 2012, a repairs and renewals fund was set up to fund items that sat outside the contract.
Council leader Virgina Taylor said the wellbeing of people in Eden was very important to the district authority and maintaining exercise facilities was an important part of that.
“I am pleased that we can keep them up to scratch,” she said.
