Thora Oliver, a member of the Yanwath community for around 20 years, passed away at the Winters Park Care Home, Penrith, surrounded by her family, at the age of 90.
Born in Liverpool, Thora was not only the youngest child to parents Robert and Catherine but also a much-loved daughter following six boys.
She was evacuated to Leek, in Staffordshire, to stay with family friends during the Second World War, returning to Liverpool at the end of the conflict.
After leaving school, Thora attended pharmaceutical college and subsequently started working in a pharmacy and opticians in Liverpool — a job she loved and one in which she gained a lifelong mentor and friend.
Following her return to Liverpool, Thora rekindled her friendship with a young man called Brian who was to become her husband and the love of her life for more than 70 years.
They got married in September 1954, settled into married life in Liverpool and went on to have two daughters, Catherine and Gillian, and a son, Jonathan.
Throughout Thora’s life with Brian the family made many house moves, and wherever they lived Thora became a much loved part of that community.
She became a volunteer for the NSPCC, leader for the girls guides, and returned to college to continue and expand her education, learning amongst other subjects Italian and French, which came in useful following retirement when they were able to spend time travelling in their trusted motor home and backpacking round parts of Asia, New Zealand, Australia, Canada, and America.
Thora enjoyed playing squash and was part of a squash club team — learning skills she later transferred to badminton.
Thora also enjoyed yoga, tai chi and Scottish dancing and liked being part of a club, getting involved with the organisation of events and meetings.
She made many friends in the clubs and groups she was a part of, including after her move to the Eden area.
Thora is survived by her husband Brian and their children, Catherine, Gillian and Jonathan. She also had grandchildren Antonia, Hayley, Scott, Jack, Joe and Molly, plus eight great-grandchildren.
A service celebrating Thora’s life was held on February 8 at Eden Valley Crematorium, Temple Sowerby, followed by a celebration of her life at the Kings Arms Hotel, Temple Sowerby. Richardsons Funeral Directors, Penrith, had charge of the arrangements.
