Adrian Manning

Adrian Manning, who was born in Derby on 24th October, 1948, second son to Nancy and Charles Manning, has died, aged 75.

The family moved to Wensley Drive in Wythenshawe, Manchester, when Adrian and his older brother Paul were young. Adrian attended Beaver Road Primary School, where he made friends he would have throughout his life.

He then secured a place at Chetham’s School of Music, where he reluctantly played the cello and preferred being in the choir. He was a great lover of music and always on the lookout for the next perfect melody. He also enjoyed playing rugby and football, and was a Manchester United supporter.

Adrian always knew he wanted to be an architect. In 1974, he graduated from the Manchester College of Art & Design, where he again made lifelong friends, and started working for Michael Hyde and Associates. During this period he lived and developed the house Ollerenshaw, Whaley Bridge, where his two daughters were born in 1985 and 1987 to his first wife.

Adrian moved to Cumbria in 1989 to start an architectural practice, Manning Elliott, with his partner Max Elliott. He worked there as a director for the rest of his life. He designed hospitals, hotels, pubs, private and commercial

properties throughout the UK and beyond.

Adrian married Rosie in Bampton in 2002. They moved to Newton Reigny the next year and have been there ever since in a house renovated and extended to his design.

There he enjoyed living with his and Rosie’s daughters and granddaughter.

Adrian had a great deal of humanity and valued friendship, kindness and a good sense of fun.

He started going to the pub on Friday nights when he was 17 and kept it up until a few weeks before his death. He relished boys’ trips and weekends, skiing, running, eating and drinking well, and watching rugby and football.

Having received exceptional support from health care professionals, Adrian died aged 75 at home surrounded by loved ones.

He is survived by his wife, daughters, grandchildren, brother and dog.
