An Eden Valley farm is to be the venue for an event which will give young sheep farmers the opportunity to show off their skills.
The National Sheep Association (NSA) northern region, with support from Cumbrian firm Carrs Billington, will be staging the Next Generation Shepherd competition at Laypool Farm, Renwick, on Sunday, August 29.
The event will be hosted by Daniel and Jackie Taylforth and is set to include the regional qualifying heat for the national finals of the NSA young shepherds’ competition.
Up for grabs will be cash prizes from a £1,000 pot.
The competition has two classes open to young shepherds aged 14-17 and 17-26.
The senior winning finalist must be aged under 27 on Wednesday, July 27 2022 to qualify for the national competition finals at the NSA Sheep Event 2022.
Challenging the young sheep farmers will be a series of shepherding tasks including lamb selection, ATV handling, stock judging and sheepdog handling.
Those seeking to develop their skills need not be put off, since the day offers the perfect opportunity to learn, with experts on hand to offer advice and guidance.
Competition organiser Heather Stoney-Grayshon said: “We hope young sheep farmers from the counties of Yorkshire, Cumbria, Durham and Northumberland are able to join us for what we expect to be a relaxed, informative and fun day.
“We are so pleased to be supported by Carrs Billington, meaning we are able to offer generous prize money to successful competitors on the day.”
The deadline for applications is Wednesday, August 18.
