Penrith Show organisers have planted an oak tree on the showfield to mark the event’s 50th year and honour the Queen’s platinum jubilee.
Show chairman Fiona Kidd said: “Strong roots are always a good foundation, something the show has in spades, so we thought it would be fitting to plant another tree this year – marketing 50 years on the field, the Queen’s jubilee and a new era for the show.
“Our new secretarial team of Andy Ryder and Pedigree Livestock Services Limited kindly donated the tree and thanks to stone supplied by Mr Wedgewood from Barton, George Allonby and his nephew David Buchannan will be building a drystone wall around it – as they did for the tree planted 20 years ago for the Golden Jubilee.”
The tree was officially planted by Jamie Fisher who has tenanted the land for over 40 years and whose family are still heavily involved in getting the show ready each year. As the tree was lowered a poem entitled Plant a Tree by Lucy Larcom was read out.
Andy said: “We’re very much looking forward to Saturday July 16 and 2022 is a great year to begin our involvement. It will be three years since Penrith Show was live, and the money raised last year with the grand draw means we are in a good starting position to make the show a great event for everyone.
“We’d also like to invite anyone who would like to become involved in the show’s development to contact us.”
