A heart warming display of generosity occurred at Kirkby Stephen mart on Tuesday evening following the untimely death of Ali Shan, of Yorkshire Halal Meats.
The Shan family’s wholesale meat business was a great supporter of the Tuesday prime sheep sale, being one of the largest buyers every week.
Several vendors donated sheep to be sold in aid of the British Heart Foundation in memory of Ali, namely Robert Skelton, New Hall Farm; Tom Sayer, Town End Farm; Arthur and George Slack, Stoneriggs; Ian Bell and Rebecca Dickens, Hallbankgate Farm; the Birkbeck family, Castle Hill; Robin and Tom Fisher, Smalmstown Farm; Geoff Smith, Kelmore Hill; Paul Fairburn, Marriforth; Ronnie Downie, Newton Farm; Richard Pattinson, Pinfold House; and Mark Wills, Fawcett Park Farm.
A fantastic £6,127.50 was raised.
The final two sheep to be offered, a prime hogg from Ronnie Downie, Aberdeenshire, and a cast ewe from Arthur and George Slack, Hilton, sold for a £1,000 each, with both being purchased by the Leo Group, Halifax.
Credit must also go to all the buyers who bid generously and many who offered the sheep to be sold several times.
These were Morgan Helliwell, Arthur Slack, Anthony and Len Skelton, Andrew Phillips, James Blenkhorn for Yorkshire Halal Meats, Gerallt Roberts for Field Fresh Trading Ltd, Dan Kemp, Dan Towers, Jack Iveson for Andrew Atkinson Livestock, the Birkbeck family, John Errington, Euro Quality Lambs and Harrison and Hetherington.
At the primestock sale held on Tuesday by Hopes, of Wigton, Robert Skelton, New Hall Farm, donated an outstanding 42kg Beltex lamb in memory of Ali, with proceeds also going to the British Heart Foundation. The lamb was sold 12 times, raising £3,030. This rose to £3,162.50 with donations from regular vendors.
