Beef Shorthorn cattle breeder Charles Lowther, of Askham Hall, Askham, was in the limelight at Stirling yesterday at the breed society’s official show and sale.
His home-bred Lowther Pegasus (TI +53, SRI +51, MI +23), a 23-month-old red bull sired by the 8,000gns Castlemount Kubota and bred from Lowther Special K, a Willingham Denebola daughter from the best family in the 40-cow herd, was awarded the overall male championship.
Show judge Cathryn Williamson described Pegasus as “a good strong, showy bull with that extra length”.
He went on to sell for 8,000gns to WSL Muir, Stromness, Orkney.
Mr Lowther also sold Lowther Picasso (TI +46, SRI +54, MI + 32), a 23-month-old roan bull by Lowther Konan, for 8,500gns to T Russell, Stanford in the Vale, Oxfordshire.
The top price of 25,000gns was paid the 22-month-old roan Palmerston of Upsall.
A Dingo of Upsall son going back to Broughton Park Thunder, he was bred and exhibited by Gerald Turton, Thirsk, North Yorkshire, and sold to J Scott and Partners, Tain, Ross-shire.
The sale saw 56 bulls sell to average £5,743, while 12 females averaged £2,879.
