Anticipated work to replace Alston’s iconic cobbles has not yet begun.
A temporary road closure to allow the work to reinstate the cobbles to a 30m section of Front Street began this week, but Cumbria County Council said although it had been requested, a date for the work to begin has not yet been confirmed.
It added: “A temporary road closure is a legal process to allow the council – or a utility company – to close a section of road for works, and must be applied for three months in advance – therefore the length of time applied for the closure is usually much longer than the project will take.
“The council is currently working to confirm a start date for the work – this will be shared with the local community in due course.
“The council will continue to work closely with the contractor and the Alston Front Street Steering Group to promote that Alston is open for business throughout the work.”
