Elections in Eden will be going ahead today with extra COVID-19 safety measures.
Voters will need to bring their own pen or pencil to put their cross on the ballot papers.
Polls for the district ward by-elections for Hartside and Skelton wards and parish by-elections for Penrith Town and Alston Moor Parish councils will open at 7am and close at 10pm.
The police and crime commissioner election will also be going ahead.
Social-distancing requirements mean polling stations will be operating differently for these elections, which may mean it takes a little longer to vote.
A spokesman for Eden Council, which has charge of overseeing the elections, said: “Our polling staff will be behind screens and wearing facemasks.
“We will wipe down surfaces in the polling booths and on the ballot boxes between voters, whilst limiting the number of voters who can enter a polling station at one time.
“Some smaller polling stations will be operating a one in, one out system and you may have to wait outside until you are asked to enter.
“Where possible, we will ensure that a clearly marked one-way system is in place.
“We will also provide hand sanitisers for voters, as well as asking voters to bring their own pens or pencils.
“You may need to wait in a queue at busier times. Unless you are exempt, you must wear a facemask. Please use the hand sanitiser provided before you enter the polling station and bring your own pen, or pencil to mark your ballot paper.
“Use any one-way system in place and make sure you keep to social-distancing measures in and around the polling station.”
