Eden council’s acting chief executive will continue in his role, the authority confirmed last night.
Jason Gooding, who was already chief executive of Carlisle City Council, was appointed as interim chief executive in January and splits his time between the two authorities.
The extension sees Dr Gooding split his time as chief executive between the two local authorities up until the end of December.
The previous arrangement was due to come to an end in May.
A statement from the authority said: “The extension stands to be a cost-effective solution until the way forward with local government reorganisation is clear.”
It added that Dr Gooding will not receive any additional remuneration, though the city council will receive in the region of £35,000 from Eden Council should the arrangement run until December as planned.
Carlisle City Council confirmed its readiness to continue the arrangement at their council meeting on Tuesday and Eden District Council approved its decision last night at its full council meeting.
An Eden District Council spokesman said: “This decision provides welcome continuity for Eden District Council’s corporate leadership team, until such time as there is more clarity over the position with local government reorganisation.
“The Government have indicated that they will announce their intention for local government reorganisation by July of this year and the extension of the current arrangements to December will give us time to put longer term plans in place in response to the outcome.”
