Skelton villagers urge council to include them in green bin scheme

Skelton residents are urging Eden Council to introduce green wheelie bins to the village.

It is one of 16 villages in the district where skips for household waste are provided in lieu of residents having access to a green wheelie bin.

Elsewhere in Eden, under the green bin scheme, contractors collect household garden waste from the kerbside every fortnight in spring and summer and once a month during winter.

Ivegill, Calthwaite and Soulby are also for eligible the household garden waste skip scheme, should their parish council wish to take up the opportunity for a skip collection service of household garden waste.

Colin Atkinson – who is a Conservative candidate standing for election to Eden Council in the forthcoming by-election – has written to the district authority asking for the village to be included in the green bin scheme instead of having to use a skip.

He said: “While I understand that it is not a mandatory duty for a local authority to provide a garden waste service, I think that you would agree that it is grossly unfair and discriminatory to offer this service to some ratepayers in Eden and not to others.”

Mr Atkinson requested that the decision not to include Skelton in the scheme be reversed with immediate effect and that the green bin garden waste service be offered to every resident in the Eden District Council area.

“The skip fills up after two to three hours – it’s heartbreaking,” said Mr Atkinson.

At present skips for household garden waste are provided at Bampton, Dufton, Glenridding, Great Asby, Hilton, Knock, Milburn, Mungrisdale, Murton, Nateby, Pooley Bridge, Ravenstonedale, Skelton, Skirwith, Threlkeld, and Warcop.

Residents can put leaves, grass, twigs, clippings, roots, shoots and weeds into the skips from their garden.

A review is currently underway of all waste and recycling collection contracts at Eden council, including household garden waste skips.

Once concluded, councillors will evaluate all the options and approve as necessary and appropriate.

However, it is understood there is no confirmed timescale for this process at the present time.

Eden Council picked up this service on behalf of parish councils in 2015, after a third party contractor ceased providing household garden waste skips, as they were unable to recover their costs.

Skips are available between April and October, for two weeks each month or until it is full.
