A Hesket Newmarket man’s photograph of the Northern Lights has been seen by millions of people across the world – thanks to the prestigious New York Times.
Steve Emery, 50, is a keen photographer and was out early last Saturday morning with his wife, Lynn, daughter Meg, 15, and friends to spot the Northern Lights.
He said he has seen the Northern Lights a few times – the village has an 18-strong Aurora Borealis group and they watch out when the lights are due to be at their strongest and send each other messages.
Steve, who works in IT, said: “There is always a number of villagers on the hills as we talk between ourselves. I got the photos at around 1.20am. It was a beautiful night.”
Steve, also a keen wildlife photographer, and his family sent photos in to us when we appealed for people’s images after the strongest chance to see the Northern Lights in Britain for over 20 years.
Steve’s pictures were spotted by the New York Times on a Facebook page and he was messaged by staff asking if the newspaper’s site could use it.
He said he was delighted to say yes. His photo was used in the article In Britain, Chasing a Glimpse of the Northern Lights, published yesterday, May 18, as the main image.
