A Penrith Rugby Club masters touch rugby sevens event has been organised for next month to raise funds for Patterdale mountain rescue team member Chris Lewis.
Mr Lewis, 60, sustained life-changing injuries in a 150ft fall a month ago when the team was called to assist a man from the Liverpool area, who was camping on Red Screes, near Kirkstone Pass.
The man and his companion were both fined for breaching lockdown rules following the incident.
Pitch fees will be paid for from club reserves.
Entry on the night — Sunday, April 18 — is by voluntary donation, with 100 per cent of proceeds going to the Lake District Search and Mountain Rescue Association’s JustGiving page in aid of Mr Lewis.
There will be four squads of 9/10 (veteran) players.
The four declared squads are Penrith Pumas (Paul Butler), Wilson’s Wolves (Trevor Wilson), Neil McSquad (Neil McNaughton) and Leek’s Lions (Andy Leek).
Trevor Wilson, who is the main organiser of the event, was keen to stress that coronavirus protocols would be strictly adhered to.
“Unfortunately, that means no spectators,” he said. “I don’t want to do that, but I want this to be run in a tight, compact, orderly manner.
” Clearly we are aware there is still a pandemic, so rules and protocols will be taken seriously.
“People can still donate through the JustGiving page.”
Trevor added that the competition had not taken much pulling together.
“Everyone has pitched in and we have a volunteer first aider, timekeeper and referee. It should be a good night with a big effort from lots of people locally.”
The action will start at 7pm and the format will be four teams, seven-a-side (ideally a squad of 9/10, as there will be 80 minutes of play), four x 20-minute games, round robin/third place game/final, standard touch rules.
