Outline planning permission has been granted for a new residential housing development on land at Ousby.
Eden Council’s planning committee approved the application by Mr Boulton, subject to a local occupancy condition, for the site, which would be accessed through Meadow Close.
Numbers and density were reserved to a future application, however, an indicative layout showed a potential three properties.
Owners of properties on Meadow Close objected to the proposal, saying that it would worsen drainage problems in the area.
Planning officer Ian Irwin said there was an ongoing enforcement case with regard to drainage in the area, but that the application had to be judged in isolation and was not a basis to refuse the scheme.
Ousby parish councillor Sue Castle-Clark also highlighted the drainage issues and said there was a David and Goliath drama playing out where “the genuine concerns of existing residents are being bulldozed by a housing developer”.
She said the community needed affordable properties, not market-led housing.
However, Ian Chambers (Con, Eamont) proposed that the application be approved.
This was seconded by Elaine Martin (Con, Hesket), who said it was an infill site and good use of land.
Councillors asked that the reserved matters also be determined by the planning committee and unanimously approved the application.
