19-year-old accused of Penrith attacks in court

A 19-year-old accused of attacking two young men on separate dates in Penrith has pleaded not guilty to the allegations.

Reece Jamie Troy faces four charges following two alleged incidents in the town centre.

One charge alleges that he unlawfully and maliciously wounded a male with intent to cause him grievous bodily harm. A second, alternative charge alleges that he caused the complainant GBH without intent.

These charges arises out of an incident on Saturday, October 1 last year, in the area of The Pinny pub on Burrowgate. A man is said to have suffered cuts and bruises to his head and face.

Troy denied both charges during a brief, remote appearance at Carlisle Crown Court this morning, when he spoke to confirm his identity and confirm that he could hear proceedings clearly over a video link.

He also faces two charges which have been brought after a second incident, on Friday November 24.

This is said to have occurred at the rear of Penrith’s Devonshire Arcade, off Sandgate. A man is reported to have suffered a fractured eye socket, cuts and bruises.

Troy is accused of causing that complainant grievous bodily harm with intent to do so. He also faces a second alternative charge which alleges that he unlawfully and maliciously caused the young man grievous bodily harm but without intent.

Appearing in front of Judge Michael Fanning today, Troy, of Eamont Mews, Penrith, pleaded not guilty to those two charges.

A trial date has provisionally been fixed and this is due to start in front of a crown court jury on June 10. It is unclear at this stage whether the separate allegations will be tried together at the same hearing.

Before he returns to court later this year, Troy was reminded by Judge Fanning to assist his legal team with the preparation of a statement setting out his defence to the allegations he faces.

His case was adjourned and, until his next court appearance, he remains remanded in custody.
