Plans are progressing to remove a parking bay at Penrith’s Portland Place and make improvements to a town junction which has been highlighted as a “genuine concern” for over a decade.
Kevin Crawley, Eden traffic management team leader for Cumbria County Council, said at Portland Place they were proposing to widen the short length of the road, amend the parking restrictions to increase a bit of no waiting at any time restrictions, and remove a 6m parking bay.
Helen Fearon (Con, Penrith) told a meeting of the county council’s Eden local committee she supported the safety improvements being proposed at Portland Place.”I think it will make improvements to a difficult junction there,” said Ms Fearon.
It is also proposed that improvements will be made to the junction at Salkeld Road and Inglewood Road near the A6 at the top end of town.
“There are plans there to close off or prevent vehicular access through the short length of Inglewood Road that links with the A6, the triangular bit, and also to introduce some no waiting restrictions,” said Mr Crawley.
Hilary Carrick (Con, Penrith) said to her knowledge the Inglewood Road and Salkeld Road junction area had caused concern for 11 years and “in principle” improvements would be welcomed.
But she asked for a refined design to better address some of the concerns which had been raised as part of an informal consultation which had already been carried out.
Councillors were told that the design team was going to explore the possibility of slightly widening the junction onto the A6 and allow a left and a right turn lane there.
It was agreed by the Eden local committee that the plans could proceed to the statutory consultation stage, which include advertisement of an order to vary the necessary traffic regulations, which is required before any work can commence.
