A Penrith town councillor has called for an investigation into the way Eden Council is handling proposals for a rise of its portion of the council tax.
Jonathan Davies, who is also party leader of CumbriaFirst, has made a formal complaint, because, he claims the district council’s leadership had “predetermined” that it would raise its council tax precept by 2.6 per cent.
The council tax proposal is currently out for a moth-long public consultation.
Councillors will decide the budget at a meeting of the full council on February 25.
But Mr Davies claimed that the authority’s leading councillors held a private meeting about the budget and council tax rise, adding: “They have agreed, regardless of what the budget committee views and the views of the public consultation, [that] the council tax rise will go ahead as per the amounts set out at the last executive meeting.”
A spokesman for Eden Council said the authority would not make any comment.
